Duke Dominates Pitt 69-31 in ACC Matchup
The No. 14 Duke Blue Devils delivered a commanding performance Sunday afternoon, defeating the Pittsburgh Panthers 69-31 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Behind a balanced offensive effort and relentless defense, the Blue Devils improved to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in ACC play, while Pittsburgh fell to 8-8 and remains winless in conference action.
A Defensive Masterclass
Duke set the tone early, showcasing their signature defensive intensity. The Blue Devils forced a season-high 29 turnovers, stifling Pitt’s offense and holding them to just 24% shooting from the field. Duke’s defense was particularly effective in the second quarter, as they allowed only six points while forcing the Panthers into a six-and-a-half-minute scoring drought.
Pitt’s struggles from beyond the arc compounded their difficulties, as the Panthers shot just 10% from three-point range in the first half. Graduate center Khadija Faye carried Pitt offensively, scoring 17 points—55% of the team’s total—but received little support as only five players contributed to the scoring column.
Reigan Richardson’s Milestone
Reigan Richardson led Duke with 13 points, reaching the 1,000-career-point milestone early in the third quarter. Richardson’s milestone basket came off a midrange jumper following a steal, epitomizing Duke’s ability to turn defense into offense.
Delaney Thomas added 10 points and provided key contributions on both ends of the floor, including a pair of blocks that fueled Duke’s transition game. Jordan Wood chipped in with nine points, highlighted by a three-pointer in the fourth quarter that extended Duke’s largest lead to 39 points.
Duke’s Offensive Efficiency
While their defense stole the show, the Blue Devils’ offense was equally effective. Duke shot 46% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc, with bench players contributing 24 points compared to Pitt’s one. The team’s ability to share the ball and create high-percentage opportunities was evident, with nine players scoring and multiple players logging assists.
Even without standout freshman Toby Fournier, sidelined with a shoulder injury, Duke controlled the paint. The Blue Devils held Pitt to just eight points in the paint before halftime, limiting second-chance opportunities and forcing contested shots from the perimeter.
Pitt’s Resilience
Despite the lopsided score, Pitt showed moments of fight, particularly in the first quarter when they managed to tie the game at 9-9 after an early Duke run. Marley Washenitz contributed seven points, four rebounds, and three steals, providing energy on both ends of the floor.
However, the Panthers were ultimately undone by turnovers and an inability to generate consistent offense. Mikayla Johnson, one of Pitt’s leading scorers, struggled throughout the game, managing just four points on 1-of-14 shooting.
Historical Significance
Duke’s victory extended their unbeaten record against Pittsburgh to 17-0. This win also marked their most dominant defensive performance of the season, as they came within one point of holding Pitt to single digits in all four quarters.
Head coach Kara Lawson praised the team’s endurance and defensive effort, emphasizing the importance of consistency regardless of the margin. With this win, the Blue Devils solidified their place among the ACC’s top teams.
Looking Ahead
Duke will face a significant test as they travel to Chapel Hill for a rivalry matchup against No. 17 North Carolina on Thursday. The Blue Devils aim to build on their defensive momentum as they seek to strengthen their position in the ACC standings.
Pittsburgh will return to the Petersen Events Center to host Louisville, also on Thursday. The Panthers will need to regroup and address their offensive inefficiencies as they look to secure their first conference win.
A Statement Win
Duke’s 69-31 victory over Pitt highlighted their ability to dominate on both ends of the floor. With standout performances from Richardson and a balanced team effort, the Blue Devils reaffirmed their status as a top contender in the ACC.
For Pitt, the game underscored the challenges of competing against elite opponents and the adjustments needed to improve in conference play. Both teams now turn their focus to the next phase of their ACC campaigns, with opportunities to build on the lessons learned from this matchup.
