Baylor Lady Bears Dominate from Start to Finish in Sweet 16
The Baylor Bears showed their strength and dominance as a team with a commanding 93-68 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks at the Greensboro Coliseum. With this victory the Baylor Bears have now reached the Elite Eight for the fifth time in six years.
Unfortunately South Carolina did not get off to a good start which could have inevitably changed the outlook of the game, but by allowing Baylor to maintain a 20 point cushion for the majority of the game it was just to tall of a hill to climb.
If you were wondering how important it was to get up on South Carolina and not let them hang around here’s what Baylor’s Lauren Cox had to say “it was important just because they are capable of just going on some runs, because they are really quick in transition. They can knock down some threes like they did late.”
South Carolina finished the game only shooting 33 percent as a team while also being held to its lowest scoring first half of the season with just 23 points. Baylor finished the game as a team shooting 52 percent from the field defeating South Carolina for the second time by a margin of 25 points.
Didi Richards scored a career high 25 points and also had some strong back up from two key parts of the frontcourt in Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox who each had a double-double.
With the way Baylor has been consistently performing one may wonder how are they handling the pressure in getting to the final four?
“I wouldn’t say pressure, unless it’s pressure on ourselves. I wouldn’t say we feel pressure from everybody else. I would just say we play our game. We go out there and we’re just being ourselves. We’re just happy to get to the Elite Eight at least, and make it to the Final Four eventually.” - Didi Richards
As Baylor shifts their focus on battling against a strong Iowa Hawkeyes team led by Megan Gustafson. Coach Dawn Staley of South Carolina left us with a final statement in regards to their sweet 16 performance and their tournament run.
“I’m super proud of our team for playing as hard as they did for 40 minutes. Obviously we didn’t execute what we needed to execute m, and that was because of, you know, the challenge Baylor posed for our team. But proud of their effort. Proud of being able to sit here and participate in the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. We look forward to a brighter future.”
