SMU Women's Basketball Opens Season with Win Over N.C. A&T
The SMU Mustangs overcame a last-minute venue change and a tough opponent to open their 2024-2025 women’s basketball season with a 77-64 victory over North Carolina A&T. Forced to play inside the Crum Basketball Center due to a water leak at Moody Coliseum, the Mustangs weathered an early deficit and delivered a dominant second-half performance.
A Strong Start for North Carolina A&T
North Carolina A&T came out firing and took an early 19-15 lead late in the first quarter, thanks to senior Jordyn Dorsey’s aggressive play. Dorsey finished with 23 points, tying her career-high, while also collecting seven rebounds and three assists. The Aggies controlled much of the first quarter, and a pair of free throws from Dorsey gave them a 21-15 lead.
The Aggies extended their lead to 29-20 early in the second quarter, with Maleia Bracone contributing key buckets, including a three-pointer. Bracone scored 13 points on efficient shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. However, SMU soon found its rhythm, launching an 11-0 run to take a 31-29 lead. Nya Robertson ignited the Mustangs' comeback, scoring eight points during the second-quarter surge.
SMU Finds Its Groove
Robertson, playing in her first game for SMU since transferring from George Washington, led all Mustangs with 21 points. She shot 6-of-15 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, adding crucial energy when SMU needed it most. Her ability to score both inside and outside was instrumental in the Mustangs' comeback. Robertson’s first-half performance set the tone, and she added two three-pointers to keep the Aggies at bay.
Jessica Peterson was equally impressive in her return from injury. The senior center notched her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, dominating the paint and protecting the rim with three blocked shots. Peterson’s presence was critical, especially given that N.C. A&T played without star center Chaniya Clark, who was sidelined with an injury.
Dominant Second Half
SMU carried its momentum into the third quarter, outscoring the Aggies 24-15. The Mustangs shot a blistering 63.6% from the field in the second and third quarters, with their inside presence proving too much for N.C. A&T to handle. SMU capitalized on its size advantage, scoring 48 points in the paint and winning the rebounding battle 46-32. Chantae Embry contributed 11 points and nine rebounds, coming up big in the post for the Mustangs.
Despite a spirited 9-0 run by N.C. A&T in the fourth quarter that cut the lead to 12 points, SMU quickly responded. A strong and-one finish by Embry swung the momentum back in the Mustangs’ favor, and they maintained control to close out the game. Freshman Kylie Marshall provided a spark off the bench, scoring a career-high nine points, including a tip-in that gave SMU its largest lead at 21 points early in the fourth quarter.
Adapting to Adversity
The sudden move to the practice gym created a unique atmosphere. The game, originally scheduled for Moody Coliseum, was relocated due to a water leak. With limited seating and an intimate environment, every cheer and instruction echoed through the gym. Despite the unusual setting, the Mustangs stayed focused and turned the situation into an advantage.
Head coach Toyelle Wilson praised her team's resilience and adaptability. The Mustangs had prepared in the Crum Basketball Center before, and their familiarity with the space proved beneficial. SMU’s defense locked down in crucial moments, holding the Aggies to 37.3% shooting from the field and forcing 12 turnovers.
Standout Performances
- Nya Robertson: Robertson’s debut was memorable, with her scoring in double figures for the ninth consecutive game, dating back to last season. Her 21 points were the most by a Mustang in a season opener since 2017.
- Jessica Peterson: Peterson’s 16 points and 11 rebounds marked her first career double-double. She played a game-high 32 minutes, showing no signs of rust after last season’s injury.
- Zanai Jones: The sophomore guard recorded 10 points and a career-high seven assists, facilitating SMU’s offense and creating opportunities for her teammates.
- Chantae Embry: With 11 points and nine rebounds, Embry was a force in the paint, providing crucial defense and physicality.
Moving Forward
SMU will return to action on November 9th, hosting Old Dominion at Moody Coliseum (weather permitting). The Mustangs will look to continue their winning ways and build on their strong start as they navigate their first season in the ACC.
North Carolina A&T, despite the loss, showed promise. The Aggies were without key contributors but still managed to challenge SMU, particularly in the first half. They will look to regroup as they head to Houston to face Rice University in their next game.
The Mustangs' victory showcased their depth, adaptability, and defensive tenacity, setting a positive tone for what promises to be an exciting season.
