SMU Shocks the Volleyball World with Upset Over #2 Nebraska
In a major early-season shocker, the SMU Mustangs swept #2 Nebraska in three sets during a regular-season matchup at Moody Coliseum. This stunning victory marks the highest-ranked win in SMU volleyball history and sets a powerful tone as the Mustangs embark on their first season as members of the ACC.
SMU’s Dominant Performance
SMU took charge early and never looked back, winning with set scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-18. The Mustangs were led by standout performances from graduate students Naya Shime and Maya Tabron, each registering nine kills. Natalie Foster added eight kills, while Jamison Wheeler contributed six kills and 13 digs, anchoring the Mustangs' defensive efforts.
Middle blocker Nnedi Okammor shined on defense with nine blocks, while setter Celia Cullen recorded 29 assists and five digs, keeping the Mustangs' offense running efficiently. Foster also tied her career-high with five aces, keeping Nebraska’s serve receive off balance. SMU hit .242 as a team, holding Nebraska to a mere .171, effectively stifling the Huskers' typically dominant attack.
Nebraska Struggles to Find Rhythm
Despite coming into the match with high expectations, Nebraska found themselves overwhelmed by the relentless Mustangs. The Huskers struggled with 11 service errors and were outplayed in nearly every aspect of the game. Merritt Beason led Nebraska with nine kills, but the Huskers were unable to build any momentum against SMU's aggressive play.
In the final set, SMU’s defense held Nebraska to just a .070 hitting percentage, solidifying the Mustangs' upset. This was Nebraska's first loss to an unranked opponent since 2017, a surprising result that shook the college volleyball world.
A Marquee Victory for SMU
This win is a defining moment for SMU volleyball, coming at a critical point as they begin competing in the ACC. Now 2-1 on the season, the Mustangs have shown they can compete with the top teams in the country. This week has already seen several top programs fall, and SMU’s win over Nebraska adds another chapter to the unpredictable and thrilling world of college volleyball.
Looking Ahead
SMU will look to build on this massive victory as they prepare for the SMU Double Tree Classic later this week, where they’ll take on UW-Milwaukee and other programs. For Nebraska, this loss is a wake-up call. The Huskers will need to regroup before their upcoming matches at the Huskers Invitational.
