Rebecca Allen Ignites Sky in 87–76 Win Over Short-Handed Wings
CHICAGO — A resurgent Chicago Sky relied on timely perimeter shooting and relentless energy from Angel Reese to complete a three-game sweep of the Dallas Wings on Wednesday night, winning 87–76 at Wintrust Arena.
Rebecca Allen delivered her best performance of the season, pouring in 27 points and drilling five three-pointers, while the Wings struggled to overcome a depleted rotation and weary legs.
Early Edge and Allen’s Hot Hand
The Sky wasted no time setting the tone. Allen entered the game shooting just 30% from deep this season but found her rhythm almost immediately. By the end of the first half, she had already connected on three triples, stretching Dallas’ defense and forcing late closeouts.
Angel Reese complemented the outside barrage with her trademark hustle plays. She pulled down offensive rebounds and converted second-chance opportunities, including a layup in the second quarter that helped Chicago build a slim lead heading into halftime.
Despite missing Courtney Vandersloot, who underwent knee surgery a day prior, the Sky controlled the tempo behind steady guard play from Rachel Banham and a concerted effort to move the ball quickly against Dallas’ zone looks.
Dallas Leaning on Rookies
For the Wings, depth remained a glaring issue. The team dressed only eight available players and leaned heavily on first-year contributors. Rookie All-Star Paige Bueckers continued her high-usage workload but looked fatigued in stretches, finishing with 17 points on 5-of-20 shooting.
JJ Quinerly, another rookie bright spot, added 16 points and showed flashes of her emerging confidence by attacking early in the shot clock. Li Yueru, Dallas’ 6-foot-7 center, proved to be the team’s most efficient option on offense, recording 18 points and 10 rebounds. She buried four three-pointers, a career high, demonstrating her ability to stretch the floor when left unguarded.
Yet for all their individual efforts, the Wings’ offense too often stalled. Aziaha James, coming off several strong outings, managed just eight points as Chicago’s perimeter defenders chased her off the arc and forced contested drives.
Third Quarter Run Turns the Game
After a tight first half, the Sky created the decisive separation late in the third quarter. Allen scored eight consecutive points during a 13–2 run that saw Chicago push a one-possession margin into a double-digit lead.
The spurt began with Allen drilling a pair of three-pointers off crisp ball movement. She followed with a long jumper from the left wing to make it 67–57 with just over two minutes left in the quarter.
Though Dallas briefly trimmed the deficit back to single digits in the fourth, Reese sealed the outcome in the final minutes. She scored a layup in traffic, grabbed a defensive rebound on the next possession, and converted a three-point play that pushed the lead to 11, effectively ending the Wings’ comeback hopes.
Reese finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, securing her league-leading 13th double-double of the season.
Wings’ Challenges Mount
The loss marked Dallas’ second straight defeat and dropped the team to 6–15 overall. Arike Ogunbowale remained sidelined with a thumb injury, while DiJonai Carrington missed her seventh consecutive game with a rib issue. Ty Harris and Maddy Siegrist also continued to rehab long-term injuries.
Fatigue is clearly taking a toll. Bueckers logged over 35 minutes again, and the Wings appeared a step slow in transition defense and late rotations to shooters.
Even so, head coach Latricia Trammell has continued to praise the resilience of her young roster. Four of the WNBA’s top-14 rookie scorers wear Wings uniforms, including Bueckers, James, Quinerly, and Luisa Geiselsöder, underscoring the program’s long-term potential despite this season’s inconsistency.
A Night of Celebration in Chicago
The Sky punctuated the evening with a halftime ceremony retiring Allie Quigley’s jersey. A Joliet native who starred collegiately at DePaul, Quigley spent a decade in Chicago and helped the franchise secure its first WNBA championship in 2021. Her No. 14 is now the first jersey retired by the organization, adding a celebratory backdrop to an important win.
Looking Ahead
Chicago (6–13) will try to build on this momentum when they host the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday. With multiple veterans back in the lineup and Allen heating up, the Sky believe they can climb back into the playoff picture.
The Wings wrap up their three-game road trip Sunday in Indiana. As the season passes the midpoint, Dallas will look for any opportunity to get healthier and stabilize rotations before the playoff chase accelerates.
For now, Wednesday’s defeat underscored both the promise of the Wings’ rookie core and the steep learning curve that comes with carrying such a heavy burden in a league where experience and depth so often decide the outcome.
