No. 7 Miami Explodes for School-Record 856 Yards in 77-7 Rout of Florida A&M
No. 7 Miami turned its home opener into a record-setting offensive showcase Thursday night, overwhelming Florida A&M 77-7 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
The Hurricanes produced a school-record 856 yards of total offense, surpassing the previous mark of 750 yards set against Ball State in 2024. Miami also tied its program record with 77 points and established another school mark with 42 first downs while improving to 2-0.
Quarterback Darian Mensah completed 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns, while backup Luke Nickel added three more touchdown passes. Miami scored touchdowns on 11 of its first 12 possessions and carried a 49-0 advantage into halftime.
Miami Starts Fast With Mark Fletcher Jr.
Miami's offensive dominance began less than three minutes into the game.
Mark Fletcher Jr. broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. After Florida A&M punted, Mensah connected with Joshua Moore for a 55-yard touchdown on Miami's next possession.
Fletcher then scored from one yard out, giving the Hurricanes a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.
The opening period was only the beginning.
Florida A&M struggled to slow Miami on the ground or through the air, and the Hurricanes continued producing explosive plays throughout the first half.
Darian Mensah Nearly Perfect Again
Mensah delivered another exceptionally efficient performance in his second game with Miami.
The quarterback completed 14 of 15 attempts for 252 yards and three touchdowns before his night ended. Through his first two games as a Hurricane, Mensah had completed 41 of 45 passes for 653 yards and eight touchdowns.
His only incompletion against Florida A&M came during a first half in which Miami's starting offense rarely encountered resistance.
Malachi Toney caught four passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, while Moore and Cooper Barkate also caught scoring passes from Mensah.
Miami finished the game with 16 different players recording at least one reception, the first FBS team to reach that number since Penn State had 17 players catch passes against Ohio in 2022.
Hurricanes Build 49-0 Halftime Lead
Miami scored four more touchdowns during the second quarter.
Toney found the end zone on a 19-yard reception. Girard Pringle Jr. scored on a four-yard run, and Barkate caught a nine-yard touchdown pass.
Javian Mallory then closed the first-half scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run, sending the Hurricanes into halftime ahead 49-0.
Miami accumulated 453 yards on only 32 plays in the first half, a remarkable level of production before the starters gave way to the Hurricanes' depth.
The result was effectively decided, but Miami's offense was not finished setting records.
Luke Nickel Throws Three Touchdowns
Nickel took over at quarterback and maintained the same offensive pace.
He opened the third quarter by connecting with Somourian Wingo for a 47-yard touchdown.
Nickel later threw a 33-yard scoring pass to Vandrevius Jacobs and connected with Vance Spafford for another touchdown from 21 yards.
The backup quarterback finished a perfect 8-for-8 for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
Mensah and Nickel therefore combined to complete 22 of 23 passes with six touchdowns.
Including Dereon Coleman, Miami's quarterbacks collectively completed 27 of 29 passes for 426 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.
Javian Mallory Breaks Loose for 52-Yard Score
Miami's rushing attack was equally productive.
Mallory finished with a team-high 142 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns. His biggest play came during the third quarter when he broke free for a 52-yard touchdown that pushed Miami's lead to 77-0.
Fletcher added 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries.
Together, Mallory and Fletcher accounted for 247 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Miami's ability to produce explosive plays on the ground prevented Florida A&M from concentrating solely on slowing the Hurricanes' passing attack.
Miami Sets School Record With 856 Yards
By the end of the night, the numbers reflected the extent of Miami's offensive dominance.
The Hurricanes finished with 856 total yards, breaking the program record of 750 established against Ball State two years earlier.
Miami also recorded 42 first downs compared with only four for Florida A&M.
The Hurricanes scored touchdowns on 11 of their first 12 possessions. The lone exception was a one-play possession in which Miami took a knee to end the first half.
With the Hurricanes leading 77-0, the teams agreed to reduce the fourth quarter from the standard 15 minutes to 10 minutes.
Miami Defense Completes Dominant Night
Miami's defense made sure the offensive records were never required to secure the victory.
The Hurricanes held Florida A&M to just 107 total offensive yards, including 70 passing yards and 37 rushing yards.
FAMU quarterback Dustin Fletcher completed 8 of 17 passes for 33 yards, while the Rattlers finished with only 37 net rushing yards on 21 attempts.
Florida A&M's inability to move the football also resulted in punter Bobby Engstler being called upon 13 times.
Florida A&M Avoids Shutout
The Rattlers' only touchdown did not come from their offense.
During the shortened fourth quarter, Caleb McKenzie recovered a fumble by Miami's Brennan Burton and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown.
The defensive score made the final 77-7.
Denzel Johnson led Florida A&M defensively with a game-high 10 tackles and a pass deflection. Frank Callum added eight tackles, including five solo stops.
The loss dropped the Rattlers to 1-2.
Hurricanes Extend Home-Opener Streak
The victory also continued another long-running Miami streak.
The Hurricanes have now won 20 consecutive home openers.
Mensah and Nickel also became the first pair of power-conference teammates to each throw three touchdown passes in the same game since Patrick Mahomes and Nic Shimonek accomplished the feat for Texas Tech against Kansas in 2016.
The image on page 5 of the uploaded source captures one of Miami's early scoring plays, showing Moore carrying the football after making his first-half touchdown reception against the Rattlers.
Miami Heads to Wake Forest
Miami now takes its undefeated record on the road.
The Hurricanes are scheduled to visit Wake Forest on Sept. 18, while Florida A&M returns home to face Tennessee State on Sept. 19.
Miami will leave its home opener with several new entries in the program record book.
The Hurricanes amassed 856 yards, recorded 42 first downs, scored 77 points and produced touchdowns on 11 possessions. Mensah was nearly perfect, Nickel did not throw an incompletion, and Mallory and Fletcher each surpassed 100 rushing yards.
By the time Florida A&M finally reached the end zone, the outcome had been settled for a long time.
No. 7 Miami defeated Florida A&M 77-7, improving to 2-0 behind one of the most productive offensive performances in Hurricanes history.
