No. 24 Cal Dominates Temple 89-63 to Secure Raising The B.A.R. Invitational Title
The No. 24 California Golden Bears wrapped up non-conference play in dominant fashion, defeating the Temple Owls 89-63 in the championship game of the Raising The B.A.R. Invitational on Sunday night at Haas Pavilion. With the victory, the Golden Bears improved to 13-1, their best start to a season since 2016-17, and claimed the tournament title behind standout performances from Ioanna Krimili and Lulu Twidale.
A Game of Runs
Cal began the game slowly, falling into a 4-0 deficit early in the first quarter. However, Lulu Twidale ignited the Bears’ offense with a three-pointer, sparking a 10-0 run that included a triple from Ioanna Krimili and a layup by Kayla Williams. The Bears took a 20-12 lead late in the quarter before Temple responded with a 9-0 run, cutting Cal’s advantage to 20-19 heading into the second quarter.
Twidale opened the second quarter with three consecutive three-pointers, pushing the Golden Bears to a 29-21 lead. Despite a brief stretch of turnovers that allowed Temple to close the gap to three points, Krimili nailed two long-range shots, including one from nearly 30 feet at the buzzer, to give Cal a 40-35 lead at halftime.
Second Half Surge
Cal’s defense clamped down in the second half, holding Temple to just 32.4% shooting from the field. Ugonne Onyiah scored the first six points of the third quarter, while Williams added a three-pointer to extend the lead to double digits. The Bears broke the game open with an 11-0 run midway through the third, highlighted by triples from Krimili and Williams. By the end of the quarter, Cal led 68-47, effectively sealing the outcome.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears maintained their dominance, building their largest lead of 28 points. Cal’s depth and relentless pressure proved too much for Temple, as the Owls struggled to generate consistent offense.
Shooting and Defensive Prowess
The Golden Bears delivered one of their best offensive performances of the season, shooting 50% from the field and 45.7% from beyond the arc. Krimili and Twidale each drained six three-pointers, contributing to the team’s 16 makes from long range. This performance solidified their status as one of the nation’s top three-point shooting duos, with both players ranked in the top 10 nationally for made three-pointers entering the game.
Cal’s defensive effort was equally impressive, limiting Temple to just six three-pointers on 25 attempts and forcing multiple turnovers during critical stretches of the game. Onyiah anchored the defensive effort, recording 12 points, seven rebounds, and several key stops in the paint.
Key Performances
Krimili and Twidale led the Golden Bears with 20 points each, earning tournament MVP honors and an All-Tournament Team selection, respectively. Krimili added five rebounds and three assists, while Twidale’s six three-pointers marked her third game of the season with five or more triples.
Williams was a model of efficiency, contributing 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, along with seven rebounds. Onyiah added 12 points and seven rebounds, while the bench provided a significant boost, maintaining the team’s energy and focus during key stretches.
For Temple, Tiarra East and Tristen Taylor led the way with 16 and 17 points, respectively. Despite their efforts, the Owls struggled to keep pace with Cal’s high-powered offense and smothering defense.
A Promising Start to ACC Play
The Golden Bears’ 13-1 record marks their best non-conference performance in nearly a decade, giving them significant momentum heading into ACC play. Head coach Charmin Smith expressed satisfaction with her team’s progress, emphasizing the importance of their depth and versatility as they prepare for tougher competition.
Cal will open ACC play on January 2 against Clemson, where they will look to continue their strong shooting and defensive intensity. With Krimili and Twidale leading the charge, the Golden Bears have positioned themselves as a formidable contender in the conference.
A Bright Future
Cal’s victory over Temple not only highlighted their offensive firepower but also underscored their potential for a deep postseason run. The Golden Bears’ balance, with contributions from their starters and bench, makes them a well-rounded and dangerous team.
As the season progresses, Cal will aim to build on their non-conference success and establish themselves as one of the premier programs in the ACC. For now, their Raising The B.A.R. Invitational title serves as a testament to their growth and ambition.
