Louisville Secures Commanding Win Over SMU, Extends Winning Streak
Cardinals Dominate from Start to Finish
No. 25 Louisville men’s basketball team delivered a decisive 98-73 victory over SMU on Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum in Dallas. The win marked the Cardinals’ ninth consecutive victory, improving their record to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in ACC play. The Cardinals, playing as a ranked team for the first time in four years, demonstrated why they belong among the top teams in the nation with a balanced offensive effort and suffocating defense.
Reyne Smith led Louisville with a career-high 30 points, tying a school record with 10 three-pointers. Chucky Hepburn added 13 points and set a new program record with 16 assists, showcasing his playmaking skills. J’Vonne Hadley and James Scott chipped in 16 points each, while Khani Rooths contributed 12 points off the bench.
A Fast Start Sets the Tone
Louisville wasted no time asserting their dominance, opening the game with a 17-6 scoring run fueled by their perimeter shooting. Smith and Hepburn set the pace, hitting three-pointers that kept the SMU defense on its heels. The Cardinals’ ball movement was exceptional, with all 14 first-half field goals being assisted.
James Scott’s back-to-back alley-oop dunks, both assisted by Hepburn, highlighted a 12-2 run that extended Louisville’s lead to 29-10 midway through the first half. By halftime, Louisville had built a commanding 50-27 lead, with their 10 three-pointers marking a season-high for a single half. Despite a brief scoring drought by SMU, the Cardinals never relinquished control.
SMU Struggles to Keep Pace
The Mustangs, entering the game as the ACC’s shooting percentage leader at 48.6%, had difficulty finding their rhythm against Louisville’s pressure. SMU missed 13 of their first 15 shots and trailed by as many as 32 points. Matt Cross led SMU with 18 points and eight rebounds, while B.J. Edwards added 16 points and three steals. Despite their individual efforts, the Mustangs could not overcome their poor shooting and defensive lapses.
Record-Breaking Performances Highlight Louisville’s Victory
Reyne Smith’s sharpshooting was a standout feature of the game. His 10 three-pointers tied his career high and broke Louisville’s all-time record for three-point field goals in a single game. Smith’s performance also marked the most three-pointers in an ACC game since 2018.
Hepburn’s 16 assists were another highlight, breaking Louisville’s single-game record and marking the highest assist total in an ACC game since 2011. Hepburn’s court vision and unselfish play were instrumental in Louisville’s offensive efficiency, as the Cardinals shot 48% from the field and 47.4% from beyond the arc.
Key Moments in the Game
SMU briefly attempted to rally early in the second half, scoring the first basket and narrowing the gap. However, Louisville responded with an 8-0 run, forcing an SMU timeout and regaining control. Smith continued to light up the scoreboard from deep, while Hadley and Scott added consistent scoring inside the paint.
Louisville’s defense remained tight throughout the game, limiting SMU’s opportunities and forcing the Mustangs into turnovers. The Cardinals also controlled the boards, ensuring that SMU could not capitalize on second-chance opportunities.
Looking Ahead
With this win, Louisville extends their longest winning streak since 2020. The Cardinals will enjoy a week off before hosting Wake Forest at the KFC Yum! Center on January 28. Louisville’s recent form and balanced attack make them a formidable opponent as they continue their push in ACC play.
SMU, now 14-5 overall and 5-3 in ACC play, will look to bounce back as they travel to Raleigh to face NC State on January 25. The Mustangs will need to address their slow starts and defensive inconsistencies if they hope to remain competitive in the ACC standings.
A Statement Victory for Louisville
This victory underscored Louisville’s potential to compete at the highest level. Their record-breaking performances, coupled with a well-rounded team effort, demonstrated their ability to dominate on both ends of the court. For SMU, the loss serves as a reminder of the adjustments needed to succeed against top-tier competition. As both teams progress through the season, the lessons learned from this matchup will play a crucial role in shaping their ACC campaigns.
