Kevin Jennings Makes SMU History as No. 17 Mustangs Roll Past UC Davis 56-10
No. 17 SMU needed only one half from Kevin Jennings to turn its home opener into a runaway.
Jennings threw for 337 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in the first half, becoming SMU's career leader in total offense as the Mustangs rolled past UC Davis 56-10 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.
SMU improved to 2-0, while UC Davis fell to 2-1. The Mustangs led 42-0 at halftime and finished with 547 yards of total offense, including 454 through the air.
Jennings Takes Over the Home Opener
Jennings entered the afternoon coming off SMU's 27-24 victory over Florida State and quickly picked up where he left off.
The fifth-year senior completed 14 of 16 passes for 337 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. All of that production came before halftime.
SMU opened the scoring with an eight-play, 90-yard drive capped by Kendrick Raphael's five-yard touchdown run.
The passing attack then took over.
Jennings found Derrick McFall for a 52-yard touchdown to make it 14-0. Theo Melin Ohrstrom caught a two-yard scoring pass early in the second quarter, and Randy Pittman Jr. followed with another two-yard touchdown reception.
SMU had a 28-0 advantage with more than 10 minutes remaining before halftime.
Kevin Jennings Breaks SMU Total Offense Record
The afternoon became historic for Jennings well before the final whistle.
His first-half performance pushed him past Ben Hicks' previous SMU career total-offense record of 8,977 yards.
Jennings ended the game with 9,073 career yards of total offense, consisting of 8,476 passing yards and 597 rushing yards.
He also increased his career total to 63 touchdown passes.
The five-touchdown performance matched a mark reached by several other SMU quarterbacks, including Garrett Gilbert, Shane Buechele, Tanner Mordecai and Preston Stone.
For Jennings, however, the bigger accomplishment was taking over the top spot in a major career category while needing only two quarters to do it.
SMU Scores Twice in Final Minute of First Half
UC Davis appeared positioned to reach halftime trailing 28-0 when it had possession near its own goal line around the two-minute timeout.
Instead, SMU turned the final moments of the half into another scoring burst.
A Jarvis Lee interception gave the Mustangs the ball at the UC Davis 20. SMU converted the takeaway into another touchdown before getting the football back once more.
Jennings then connected with Yannick Smith for a 44-yard touchdown, sending the Mustangs into halftime with a 42-0 lead.
SMU accumulated 372 yards in the first half, while UC Davis managed 121.
The 42 first-half points were SMU's most in an opening half since scoring the same number against Houston Christian in 2024.
SMU Spreads the Football Everywhere
Jennings' numbers were impressive, but SMU's passing performance was not built around a single receiver.
A program-record 16 different Mustangs caught at least one pass, surpassing the previous record of 13 set against Tulsa in 2023.
Yamir Knight led SMU with three receptions for 62 yards.
Melin Ohrstrom caught three passes for 25 yards and two touchdowns, while McFall added two catches for 57 yards and a score.
Jalen Hale made his only reception count, producing a 51-yard catch. Smith's lone reception became his 44-yard touchdown.
The Mustangs finished with eight explosive plays, including five completions of at least 30 yards.
Ty Hawkins Keeps Mustangs Moving
With the game firmly under control, Jennings did not return after halftime.
Sophomore Ty Hawkins took over and used his first significant snaps in an SMU uniform to keep the offense moving.
Hawkins completed 11 of 13 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
His first touchdown pass went eight yards to freshman tight end Zack Turner. It represented the first career touchdown pass for Hawkins and first career touchdown reception for Turner.
Hawkins later connected with Aljour Miles II for a three-yard score, also Miles' first career touchdown reception.
SMU finished the afternoon with eight touchdowns, seven of them coming through the air.
Mustangs Defense Keeps UC Davis Quiet
SMU's offense dominated the attention, but its defense made sure UC Davis never had an opportunity to turn the game competitive.
The Mustangs recorded six tackles for loss, two sacks and two takeaways. Lee provided the interception, while Jaylen Moses recovered a fumble.
UC Davis finished with 233 total yards, including only 62 rushing yards.
The Aggies converted just 2 of 13 third downs and were held scoreless through the first three quarters.
Starting quarterback Treynor Cleeland completed 11 of 26 passes for 83 yards with an interception.
UC Davis Gets on the Board in Fourth
The Aggies finally broke through early in the fourth quarter.
Minnesota transfer Jackson Kollock connected with Coby Herman for a four-yard touchdown, giving both players the first collegiate touchdowns of their careers.
Robert Meyer later added a 33-yard field goal, his first as a UC Davis player and the Aggies' first field goal of the season.
Those scores produced the final 56-10 margin.
Extreme Heat Leads to Shortened Second Half
The conditions added another unusual element to SMU's home opener.
The temperature at kickoff reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with a heat index of 107. With the Mustangs already leading 42-0, the coaches agreed to play two 12-minute quarters after halftime instead of the standard 15-minute periods.
The 100-degree kickoff temperature tied for the fourth-highest recorded for an SMU game.
Even with the shortened second half and extensive use of reserves, the Mustangs still surpassed 500 yards for the second consecutive game.
SMU Takes 2-0 Record to Louisville
SMU now turns toward another early ACC matchup.
The Mustangs will travel to face No. 24 Louisville on Saturday, Sept. 19, at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.
UC Davis returns home after opening its season with three consecutive road games. The Aggies went 2-1 during that stretch and will host Stetson on Sept. 19.
For SMU, the home opener belonged to Jennings and an offense that repeatedly created explosive plays.
The Mustangs scored eight touchdowns, had 16 different players catch a pass and piled up 547 yards. Jennings needed only one half to throw five touchdown passes and establish himself as SMU's new career leader in total offense.
The result was never in doubt after halftime as No. 17 SMU defeated UC Davis 56-10 to improve to 2-0.
