Grambling Triumphs Over Texas A&M Commerce in Overtime Thriller
In a dramatic overtime showdown, Grambling State University pulled off a thrilling 35-28 victory over Texas A&M Commerce on Saturday night at Ernest Hawkins Field. The game, marked by turnovers and key defensive plays, ended with Grambling securing the win on a three-yard touchdown run by Tre Bradford in overtime, followed by a game-sealing interception by Patrick Marshall.
Defensive Battles and Big Plays
Defense was the story of the night for Grambling, with the Tigers forcing six turnovers throughout the contest. Despite Texas A&M Commerce outgaining Grambling by nearly 200 yards, the Tigers' defense made the critical plays to keep them in the game. Early in the first quarter, Blake Davis returned a 35-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, showcasing Grambling’s defensive intensity.
Texas A&M Commerce quickly answered with a 69-yard touchdown run from B.K. Jackson, and both teams traded scores throughout the first half. By halftime, the game was tied 21-21, with Grambling’s Tre Bradford scoring on a 41-yard touchdown run.
Turning Point in Overtime
The second half was a defensive battle, with neither team able to break the deadlock. Texas A&M Commerce briefly took the lead in the third quarter on a three-yard rushing touchdown by Braxton Garmon. However, with just over a minute left in regulation, Nicholas Howard caught a 27-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 28-28, sending the contest into overtime.
Grambling took advantage in overtime, with Ke’Travion Hargrove making a key 17-yard reception to set up Bradford’s game-winning touchdown. On Texas A&M Commerce’s first overtime possession, Patrick Marshall’s interception sealed the victory for the Tigers.
Key Performances
Tre Bradford was a standout for Grambling, rushing for 73 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Quarterback Myles Crawley added 125 passing yards and two touchdown passes, though he also threw two interceptions. Defensively, Andrew Jones led the Tigers with 13 tackles, while Grambling’s defense forced four interceptions and two fumbles.
For Texas A&M Commerce, B.K. Jackson had a strong showing, rushing for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Despite a solid rushing attack, the Lions were undone by turnovers, including four interceptions thrown by quarterback Ron Peace.
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Grambling improved to 2-1 on the season, their best start since 2017. They will face Jackson State next week in a highly anticipated matchup. Meanwhile, Texas A&M Commerce, now 0-3, will look to rebound from a difficult start to the season.
